Executive Panel Shares Key Insights Into Sustainability

Leading Xerox premier partners share challenges and future goals when it comes to being ‘green.’

AUSTIN, Texas - October 29, 2008 - QuantumDigital (quantumdigital.com), the complete online service provider for direct mail, on-demand digital printing and eMarketing solutions, shares key insights from the Xerox Premier Partners Global Network Executive Breakfast Briefing on sustainability that took place Monday, October 27, 2008, at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place in Chicago, IL.

Patricia Calkins-Vice President of Environment, Health and Safety at Xerox Corporate-set the stage by announcing, “The earth’s population is currently around six billion. To provide the resources for everyone to share the Western World’s standard of living would require the resources of three planets, according to the United Nations Environment Program.” She went on to share tips on how companies can start their own green initiatives. Following is a summary of some points:

1) Understand your company’s environmental impacts and set goals to reduce them
2) Embrace print-on-demand capabilities
3) Utilize “soft proofing” by sharing PDFs rather than printing files
4) Change copiers to print on both sides of paper
5) Use good waste prevention & management practices
6) Seek equipment designed for remanufacturing or recycling
7) Partner with other environmentally responsible suppliers

Later, the over 120 attendees were able to ask the panelists questions about their green initiatives and goals. Panelists included Steve Damman of QuantumDigital, Austin, Texas; Chris Hutson of DCG, Digital Color Graphics, Indianapolis, IN; and Robert Kashan of EarthColor, based in Parsippany, N.J.

All the panelists shared core themes for why they went green–to do the right thing for the community, their employees and future generations. A key theme that highlighted what initiated these companies to go green included customer demand. All panelists found that going green helped to generate savings and gain new business. They noted that some requests for proposals now require descriptions of a company’s sustainability efforts.

Damman of QuantumDigital reported that their company has a modest, but well-documented program that is showcased in its customer materials. “When you show yourself to be a leader by bringing up sustainability before your customer asks about it, that helps makes you a market leader in their eyes as well,” he said. Damman also featured their ‘green’ video that focuses on many of the sustainable efforts that QuantumDigital has implemented. View the video on QuantumDigital’s Green Initiatives page.

Chris Hutson of DCG, Digital Color Graphics, Indianapolis, IN, described how DCG captures heat generated by its Xerox iGen3TM 110 Digital Production Press to fully heat its plant, generating dramatic savings. “We have a sign in the lobby letting visitors know the heat they feel is recycled from our press,” he said.

Robert Kashan of EarthColor, based in Parsippany, N.J, described his company’s well-funded and comprehensive green program, which has a dedicated sustainability director and bio-oxidizers that make the plant’s air cleaner than the air outside. “I feel fortunate that we have the scale and revenue base to support these initiatives,” he said. “It’s an expense, and it’s a very important expense.”

All panelists agreed that companies must do their part in preserving the environment for generations to come. “We are not passing the earth down to our children, but only borrowing it from them,” said Caulkins.
